Canyon Voyages History
Opened in 1991 by Don and Denise Oblak, Canyon Voyages quickly grew to cover more and more adventures throughout Moab, Utah. Their focus on the customer made Canyon Voyages adventures personal and accommodating, making sure everyone has an amazing adventure.
After 26 years Don and Denise floated downstream into retirement, leaving the adventure to Brian Roe and Chris Martinez in 2017. Brian Roe And Chris Martinez are founders of Grassroots Events, an ultra racing and trail running tour provider in Moab, Utah.
Martinez is a veteran of the river running industry. He began his career as a guide in 1997 with Canyon Voyages as a first-year river guide running the Colorado River “daily” section. He later worked with Griffith River Expeditions, and also with Navtec running sports boats in Cataract Canyon. He later founded Grassroots Events and 360° Moab Adventures, a company that caters to long-distance trail running enthusiasts. Its two major race events—the Red Hot Race and the Amasa Run—attract thousands of people to Moab each year from all over the world.
“We’re looking forward to taking Canyon Voyages to the next level.” – Chris Martinez
Roe brings an extensive background in business management to the company. He founded B-Roe Management, LLC, which provides strategic planning services for all types of businesses including non-profit organizations. Previously, Roe lived in Austin, Texas, but his love of mountain biking made him a frequent visitor to Moab for many years. Roe graduated from Elmira College in New York where he earned a degree in public administration. He has also worked for the Austin police department, and is familiar with the recreation industry, having owned and operated his own bike shop in Texas.
“We are humbled to continue the company’s involvement as a partner in the Moab community, and continue the vision started by Don and Denise back in 1991.” – Brian Roe
At Canyon Voyages, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact. We are proud of the steps we have taken so far and are devoted to improving the world around us and leaving no trace to Moab’s natural environment.
As part of a partnership with the City of Moab and Rocky Mountain Power, Canyon Voyages purchases wind power through the Blue Sky Program. In 2008 we installed eight 4×6 photovoltaic panels to use Moab’s abundant sunshine to offset our power needs and carbon footprint.
Canyon Voyages recycles its paper, cardboard, glass and plastic. We encourage our customers to purchase refillable low-cost water bottles to reduce single-use, throw-away bottles and to help us practice the 3-R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle.
