How to Prepare for a Whitewater Rafting Trip
Whitewater rafting trips can be an exciting adventure for most ages and skill levels. If you’re currently thinking about planning your first whitewater rafting trip, there are a few key things to know before you head out to ensure you have a safe and fun excursion. We’ve listed a few tips to help you prepare.
What to Wear When You Go Whitewater Rafting
Whitewater rafting is a great way to get outside and have fun in nature, but it’s important to make sure you are adequately dressed for the elements when you go on a rafting trip. You should always wear life jackets and helmets, which are usually provided for you when on an excursion with a rafting company.
In addition to life jackets and helmets, it’s important to wear appropriate footwear. Tennis shoes or closed toed water sandals are good choices. Flip-flops are not appropriate since they can easily come off your feet.
When it comes to clothing options, loose-fitting clothing made from any one of the following materials is a good choice: microfleece, wool, polypro, fleece, polyester, waterproof jackets and any other outdoor material that dries fast. It’s important that you dry off quickly to avoid illness after the trip. Avoid cotton materials as they do not dry easily.
Lastly, remember to always dress for the weather conditions. If you want to enjoy the fun without getting too wet you could wear a raincoat.
What to Bring When You Go Whitewater Rafting
Often times space on a raft can be limited, so it’s important to bring only what you need. Some items that may be beneficial to your trip:
- Sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays
- Sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays
- A change of clothes and shoes for after the trip
- Bottled water and carabiners so you can attach the bottle to the boat
- A fanny pack where you can store the water or other items you might need
